I know how you feel… you are not alone…

justin

Seven year old Justin was amongst the six of us who shaved our heads last Sunday, as pictured.  (Shot taken by Bro Reptile of RSeries Forum)

On Tuesday when he went back to school (Monday was Youth Day holiday), he was mocked by friends and classmates.  This is exactly the reaction that children with cancer face when they return to school or even amongst social circles.  The only difference this time was that Justin’s predicament was one made by choice and it is temporary.

It was also good to hear that the teachers put a stop the the mocking by telling the other students about Justin’s noble deed over the last weekend.  In fact, the school has arranged for the CCF HfH2007 satellite event to be scheduled in the school next week where more students can participate (with parental consent) and Justin will be volunteering for the event a second time even though he is a pioneer in that aspect within the school already!

Way to go Justin… you are certainly a brave heart two times over!!!

Father and son team

Last Sunday, a group of friends and myself went for the Children’s Cancer Foundation event Hair fo Hope 2007 to raise funds and awareness for children with cancer.  Every year, about 120 children get diagnose with cancer in Singapore.  They shouldn’t be going through things like this but it does happen.

The fact that almost all of them would lose their hair due to chemo, it affects how these children feel, especially about themselves.  This is over and above the pain sufferings for the child and the parents and siblings.  Many afflicted children feel a sense of relief when their siblings join them in support by shaving their heads as well.  Small gestures like that make a huge difference.

Pictured on the left is my friend Nelson who answered my call for volunteers to join me as a shavee.  Some time later, his 7 yer old son, Justin, also wanted to join in the event – on his own accord after listening about his father’s plans!

Very brave and sensible young man he is… we were all very proud of Justin for making the decision independently and then following through.  I thought this photo captured the special bond between father and son… all for a very good cause… and had to be shared for the world to see.

This photo was captured by another friend from RSeries Forum, bro Reptile, who was one of the many who covered the event by photographic duties. Two days ago, the photo was from Ming – see his blog (link on the right panel)

Yellow cow

How much do you think this balloon sculpture is worth?

After shaving my head for a good cause, my little Princess wanted a ballon scupture… and when asked, she said that she wanted a yellow cow.  Lucky girl managed to get one.  The process took an expert almost 20 mins to conjure up with all sorts of complicated twists and turns!  The cow even has corneas!!!

Anyway, it was very worth a $10 donation to CCF and the Princess was happy…  hope she knows how lucky she is…

Bald Ambition accomplished !!!

I am back!

Yes, been busy with a 9 year old personal matter… and last Sunday, I was part of a car enthusiast group from TCS and RSeries who went to a public event to shave our heads for fund raising (see picture above).

So, what’s this Children’s Cancer Foundation’s Hair for Hope 2007 all about??

Hair for Hope is an event which invites members of the public to shave their heads to show their support for children with cancer. Through this symbolic gesture, we aim to:

  • Tell every child with cancer and their their families that they are not alone in the fight
  • Help raise funds for Children’s Cancer Foundation through monetary pledges, to aid the Foundation in improving the quality of lives of our children and their families.
  • Create awareness of childhood cancer in Singapore (every year about 120 children are disgnosed with spontaneous occurences of cancer and have to undergo therapy

Why Shave Heads?

Patients’ hair loss, from treatments of cancer such as chemotherapy, is a representation of his or her courageous fight against cancer. Through the symbolic gesture of shaving our heads, we hope to lend moral support to all children with cancer, and to let them know that there is nothing wrong with being bald.
