Moon cakes

Mooncakes are Chinese pastries traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The festival is for lunar worship and moon watching; moon cakes are regarded as an indispensable delicacy on this occasion. Mooncakes are offered between friends or on family gatherings while celebrating the festival, one of the three most important Chinese festivals.

Typical mooncakes are round or rectangular pastries. A thick filling usually made from lotus seed paste is surrounded by a relatively thin crust and may contain salted egg yolk. Mooncakes are rich, heavy, dense and taste delicious :-)

Here a shopper choosing which types of moon cakes to buy.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri

Today is the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration for all Muslims here in Singapore and throughout the world. Most shopping centres like this one in West Mall decorates and have store discounts & promotions for the shoppers. Tomorrow (Monday) is a national holiday in celebration of Hari Raya.

“Hari Raya” literally means “Day of Celebration” — it is also occasionally used to refer to Eid ul-Adha in the form of “Hari Raya Aidiladha”. The main greeting used by Muslims in Malaysia and Singapore is “Selamat Hari Raya” which means “Happy Eid” in Malay. …from Wikipedia.

During the Muslim month of Ramadan leading up to Hari Raya, it is mandatory for Muslims to fast from dawn to dusk. Usually on the eve of the celebrations, family members, especially mothers and housewives, will be busy preparing food, cakes, sweets, biscuits and various delicacies to be served on the day of Hari Raya. Delicacies such as ketupat or rice cake and a meat cuisine called rendang are among the most famous cuisines that are served during this day. Other family members will help in other chores such as decorating and cleaning up the house.
