July 21, 2010 - Elgin Bridge by Mark Ng

Mark took this photo of the Elgin Bridge which was built in 1929.

This vehicular bridge cross the Singapore River, linking the Downtown Core to the Singapore River Planning Area located within Singapore’s Central Area. Named after Lord Elgin, Governor-General of India (21 March 1862 – 20 November 1863).

As this was the first bridge across the river, the two roads leading to it were named North Bridge Road and South Bridge Road accordingly.

The finance industry went through traditional moneylanding to today’s modern stock market dealers. This sculpture showing the Chinese coolie and the boss (in hokkien ‘towkay’). Do you know who why these men are wearing a queue (or pigtail) in those days?

Phebe volunteered at the NDP marching contingent this year for the St John’s ambulance brigade. Her zone was selected and it was part of the preview for the National Day Parade. It was fun to be there and there she was taking a little break :)
