Riverside Point @ Singapore River_5696

There there three museums around this area. They are the Asian Civilisations Museum at 1 Empress Place, the Mint Museum of Toys at 26 Seah St and the Peranakan Museum at 39 Armenian St. You are recommended to check them out as a day program and at night this area along the Singapore River transformed into a wonderful place for a walk. Green garden city and old-style bridges, best of all the historical buildings.

Singapore River

Do you know: Singapore River was the very lifeblood of the colony, the trade artery, the center of commercial activity, the heart of entrepot trade, the vessel of importance, the capillaries of life. Besides being the place which was frequented by the secret societies, the swaylos and the coolies who worked for the philanthropist Tan Tock Seng at Ellenborough Market, it is also where the towkay Tan Kim Seng filled his godown with the riches of the East.

Singapore River is where the memories of the lighters, bumboats, tongkangs with their painted eyes to see the danger ahead and sampans of yesteryear. This is where the Malayan princes once sailed and this is where the bullock carts plodded their way up and down each bank as the river found its way to the former rocky river mouth. This is also where an early civilisation was conquered by the Javanese Majapahit Empire, in the year 1376.

The Chinese used to live on the south bank, the Malays in kampongs further upstream, and the Indians used to reside until the Chinese forced them out to Rochor, Kallang and Geylang.

This is a very nicely composed photo by wsboon.

[Swaylos means coolies who worked on a boat; towkay means business owner]

Riverside Point @ Singapore River by WsBoon

Oh, this is really a beautiful capture of the Riverside Point. It is right next to the Singapore River which has been the centre of trade since modern Singapore was founded in 1819. During the colonial era, Boat Quay was the commercial centre where barge lighters would transport goods upstream to warehouses at Clarke Quay.
