Theme Day: Postcard-worthy 2011 Singapore National Day Rehearsal

So it’s our national day once again. We will celebrate it on the 9th August 2011. I think this colourful photo is also postcard-worthy for the August Theme day.

Theme Day: ”Under Construction”

This was taken in 2011 Thaipusam @ Little india Sri Perumal Temple by wsboon.
Devotees prepare for the celebration by cleansing themselves through prayer and fasting approx-48 days before Thaipusam. Kavadi-bearers have to perform elaborate ceremonies at the time of assuming the kavadi and at the time of offering it to Murugan. The kavadi-bearer observes celibacy and take only pure, Satvik food, once a day, while continuously thinking of God.

On the day of the festival, devotees will shave their heads and undertake a pilgrimage along a set route while engaging in various acts of devotion, notably carrying various types of kavadi (burdens). At its simplest this may entail carrying a pot of milk, but mortification of the flesh by piercing the skin, tongue or cheeks with vel skewers is also common.

The simplest kavadi is a semicircular decorated canopy supported by a wooden rod that is carried on the shoulders, to the temple. In addition, some have a small spear through their tongue, or a spear through the cheeks. The spear pierced through his tongue or cheeks reminds him constantly of Lord Murugan. It also prevents him from speaking and gives great power of endurance. Other types of kavadi involve hooks stuck into the back and either pulled by another walking behind or being hung from a decorated bullock cart or more recently a tractor, with the point of incisions of the hooks varying the level of pain. The greater the pain the more god-earned merit.

It is like a teaser with this photo to this month’s theme day called ‘under construction’.

Singapore October Theme Day: graffiti

Sounds like a challenge to find graffiti in Singapore. It’s a ‘FINE’ city, I was thinking how to get this photo for a while, until I remembered I took one which was a concept for a chill out cafe in Singapore called ‘Gone Fishing’. The thing is, this cafe is not having this concept anymore: they allow their customers to scribble anything they want on their walls!

Happy Theme day my friends, and happy children’s day for all in Singapore :)

December Theme Day: Waiting

December Theme Day Waiting

Zsolt’s waiting.

He was in Singapore this year and pardon me for not having a latest photo to post for this theme day.
As a photographer, this is quite a common moment. Waiting for the best moment. Here you can see that he was waiting for the right moment with his iPhone. Guess what he was waiting to capture? :)

South East Asia’s Biggest Magic Event at the Singapore River

the Central September Theme Day : BIG

It wasn’t so easy to find something ‘big’ in a small place like Singapore! Hence for today’s theme day, I’ve chosen Central. It’s more because this was where a South East Asia’s Biggest Magic Event at the Singapore River” was presented by having Singapore top magic duo - J C Sum and ‘Magic Babe’ Ning who teleported 3 people across the iconic Singapore River in 2.5 seconds on the 24th of September 2008.

This mega illusion was part the F1 Singapore Grand Prix Season. Named “The Impossible Journey”, the starting point were 3 separate teleportation chambers, each on a see-through platform, atop a see-through stage at the Central river promenade.

Feet – June Theme Day

IMG_0807

This theme day is a little special, I’ve invited Chris Yang, who used to be my special co-author on the Singapore DP, to have this photo featured.
ChrisYang:”My daughter just had a different kind of foot spa… Barney was drawn on her foot… and she was so proud of it, so I had to share it with you all.”
aka MadScientist

The theme is ‘feet’ but here’s only showing her foot. Anyway, Happy Theme Day!
